OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The RN provides a variety of pediatric nursing services to adolescents in a psychiatric residential treatment center. Conducts in-service trainings for staff on health care topics, provides medication management, and provides direct care, supervision, and behavior interventions to clients on assigned shift. The position operates within established guidelines and/or legal requirements, standing orders from an M.D., this position description, Licensing, professional standards of medical practices, and Looking Glass policy.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Assists in providing medical care for all clients, ensuring that federal, state, and local health requirements are met.
2. Functions as a liaison between Looking Glass Community Services and the medical community and hospitals.
3. Maintains accurate medical records for each client, including medical treatment plans, medical administration record, progress notes and 30-day reviews when indicated.
4. Participates in the organization’s quality assurance process, serving on committees as required.
5. Monitors compliance with Looking Glass health service standards, Counsel on Accreditation standards, and licensing requirements for psychiatric residential treatment service providers.
6. Assesses the medical needs of clients and provides patient care and referral as indicated.
7. Assist in coordinating the scheduling of clients for necessary medical appointments in the community.
8. Monitors and reviews the M.D.’s medication orders on a weekly basis, administers medication on assigned shift, and observes and documents effects.
9. Provides education and counseling to clients about health issues, medication, and personal responsibility for health and hygiene.
10. Provides nursing assessment upon admission, which includes a communicable disease screening of new clients, developing an initial medical treatment plan and following up on identified health care concerns.
11. Communicates regularly with treatment team members regarding clients’ health status.
12. Assists in coordinating sanitation, nutrition, and pharmacy services.
13. Ensures that community-based health care providers are prepared for the special needs of clients referred from Looking Glass by providing information and/or training.
14. Assists in the development, implementation and monitoring of emergency services and protocols for client care.
15. Maintains first aid kits, emergency and medical supplies.
16. Assists in developing, implementing and monitoring medication, medical and general health-related policies and procedures.
17. Acts as the Clinical Responder for crisis situations that occur on the secure unit, completing documentation as required in a timely manner.
18. Performs related duties as assigned.
